North East Wimmera district of Victoria.

Similar experience to some mentioned above.

As a kid, folks would buy 100 new born chicks. When rooster/hen could be told, roosters had a small pellet injected under the skin at the back of the head. A 'Caponising' drug.

Whatever it was stopped their 'sex drive' and they quietly got big and fat.

Pullets were later sold around as 'point of lay', and the roosters to eat!

Problem! Immigrants [Italians] were used to boiling the head for soup - which 'caponised' the males, therefore no 'bambino's'!  Product was banned as I recall.
