My dads sister worked at a hatchery, every year dad would get free rooster chicks.
I think they only wanted hens at the hatchery. Dad said he would go out to get a chicken to butcher, eventually they would not get close to dad, 
so he ended up shooting them with a .22. Got to the point dad said it was like pheasant hunting.
I think I remember reading Amish people would come and clean and dress chickens for a fee.
