Don't remember any specific breed name but they were probably hybrids produced for their size.
they grew quickly and as you note this led to leg problems.
Since we often killed and prepared them ourselves cripples could often be salvaged or death losses from bad legs rose as they neared the 5-6kg size
Were good for a family meal unlike the little broilers that are common in stores but many families are smaller now too and probably not interested in making chicken sandwiches for lunch all week.
And Leghorns were small chickens raised for egg laying, not meat birds. | |
