SE Iowa | 6th year farming for myself. Best I can figure is to forward sell some each month with your biggest sales being in the months where highs more frequently take place. Usually get a spring scare if not getting the acres in and a summer scare of drought. If you get a big up day I usually sell a little that day instead of waiting to see if it goes further. I like 5% of aph priced each month Dec-March then 10% of aph priced from April-July. Should get you to 60%. Depending on weather in August and Sept and you have a reasonable feel for your crop you can extend to 75% or higher if desired depending on your comfort with risk. This is my rough plan and try to always stick to the plan. I focus on getting at least an average price and an above average crop.
Don’t hire a marketer in my opinion as that’s just skimming your profits on a market that’s anybody’s best guess. | |
