it shouldn't  have blown the seals--  it would've just run backwards, right?    
I'd think slamming the valve off to instantly stop the pump  w/o that  'H'  bypass  would be far more destructive than running the motor in reverse.  --- that is if the return is  plugged into the SCV.     



Not that motor, they do not like any pressure on the seals at all. The newer ones are better, but still don't take much abuse. They make a blower motor with a case drain and a redesigned housing to help protect the seal from overpressure, and if we have someone who has repeat failures on them, we almost always tell them they should install that new motor...but you have to plumb in a case drain line on the planter.

We don't fail near as many as we used to, getting people to turn flow down and switching them to return lines so you can't pressure the return has solved 90% of the issues we used to see.
