Starlings won't be eating gnats and mosquitos like swallows might, even swallows would mostly eat larger bugs. Starlings need worms, grubs, bigger meals than most flying insects, because they're much bigger and much slower. But they're eating bugs just the same, just not the ones that eat you, the ones that eat crops or other bugs mostly. Interestingly, Cornell labs says their population has dropped by 50% since the 60's, so their population explosion has leveled off like most invasives do.
