Coal strip mines used ammonia nitrate fertilizer in deep post auger holes (explosives put in bags) made with a 3-point auger and tractor. The fertilizer was mixed with diesel fuel with a stick of dynamite detonator and wires joined all together to break up/loosen the coal seams for easier scooping the coal.
