Subject: RE: Cows bred in a 45 day cycle?

Alberta
Cows in good shape is half the battle, it takes 60 days for an embryo to attach, any stress will cause them to abort. Last year we had bull issues on a herd of 110 cows and had only 43 percent bred the first cycle. Cows were condition score 3 to 3.5 on a 5 scale and they were being fed daily in a 10 acre pasture, so it was not a case of missed the bull. Been calving heifers on a 23 day cycle for 25 years, it does improve fertility rates in the cows for the first few years, but its still seems at 5 or 6 years of age, some of those cows will back off a cycle and the older they get the worse they get. our 10 year old plus cow pasture is consistently 20 percent open on a 62 day cycle. You can do a 45 day cycle, but your open percentage may go from 7 to 15.
