Always see pictures of steam engines plowing, but never any field work. Were they ever used for other tillage or seeding work. Any photos?
If you look hard enough you will find a few mostly taken on western wheat farms but for the most part they were only used for breaking sod and threshing. They were expensive machines and with all the exposed working parts and drivetrain they would wear out quickly in the dust I assume. Even the Bonanza farms which could make use of the big steam and gas tractors for field work stuck with horses for general field work after the sod was broke
