North Central KS | Took a drive west on Saturday 2 hrs to Hays KS. We farm east of Salina about 30 miles. In our area we missed big rains that most of the Midwest has received by 15-20 miles. Production changing rains. I would guess looking at our wheat we still have average in store if we can get some more rain to fill the head. However. Driving down I-70 past Salina it’s a whole other world out there. So dry the grass won’t grow down the interstate. We saw wheat fields totally yellow from either drought or freeze and once even farther to Hays, wheat that has already been disked down to go to something else. I would argue that 2/3s of KS wheat is in very rough shape. The other 1/3 is probably in pretty decent shape from recent crop saving rains. Yet lower we start out again today. This is 3 years in a row that we will have production issues for wheat and honestly all crops. So when does the wheat market notice this..? | |
