Subject: Calf Having Trouble Nursing - Plz Help

Had a red angus calf born yesterday afternoon. Born easily got up quick, and I was certain it had nursed. I saw milk around its mouth.

Checked on it this morning, it was vocal but seemed okay. Checked this afternoon still vocal and a little lethargic. I stayed to watch it nurse and it was in the udder area but never seemed to get the teat in its mouth, was getting some milk as it nudged it out and it was dripping but seemed to want to nurse anything but the teat. Almost acting like it’s blind, but I am pretty sure it isn’t.

Decided to lock the mom up and get it to nurse, and it did with a little effort. Then milked some more out and gave it some of a bottle and it drank it just fine.

The cows teats are big, but I have seen bigger. Any ideas and advice as to why this calf is having trouble finding the proper place to nurse?
