RR Valley, ND; MN native
Went to college in Flint in the late 80s. From MN. Always took I-69 to Flint. One time, went home with a friend who lived in a suburb of Rochester NY so we went to Port Huron from Flint, across Ontario to Niagara Falls. No passports, etc needed in '88. I've not been back since '91. The only time I have ever been in Detroit metro was for a work meeting about 2002 or so. I think the project manager was driving our group.

There is no good way to bypass Chicago unless you go way south. A scenic route is to take I-75 north from Flint up to the UP over the Mackinac bridge and then take US 2 across into WI. From there a choice to stay on 2 over to Duluth or take US 8 to I-35. I always took 8 to make my trip a bit shorter as I was not sight seeing.
